(‘breathing out’)

Prāṇa, the vital force that bestows life and energy to the body, is responsible for all its activities. Though one, depending upon the various functions it discharges, it is often described as five-fold: prāṇa, apāna, vyāna, samāna and udāna.

Apāna, the second in the series is that aspect of the vital force which flows downward (below the navel) and is respon-sible for the function of the excretory organs.
