anārya

(‘non-Ārya’)

The words ārya and anārya, whatever their original connotations, lost their racial flavour in later literature. ‘Ārya’ is a well-bred man, a refined and cultured gentleman. Anārya is the opposite of all these. The word was often used in a derogatory sense.
